russian communal living project - january '11

whilst on foundation we were asked to complete an observations project - 40 observations using different media of one specific object. i chose a 1980's Russian Lomo Lubitel 166 Medium Format camera. whilst i found this recording part interesting, i wanted to take the project in a new direction. i researched the history behind the camera, specifically its production in Leningrad, the political state of the country and was drawn towards the communal living situation, or the 'kummunulka's'.

i discovered the amount of space allotted to an adult was 10 square metres, and a child only 5 square metres. families lived in confined, communal apartments.
as an experiment, i covered my kitchen floor with paper equal to the amount of space allowed to one person. before entering the kitchen, there was a piece of paper with crushed charcoal on. every day i replaced the crushed charcoal; this resulted in 'the kitchen' - a full week captured in the marks made by those walking in and around the kitchen.

i used the experience of archiving i gained from my previous project, and created an installation based on the research i collated on the russian communal apartments, the 'kommunulkas'.

traces/imprints project - january '11

an archival project on my Grandpop completed during my foundation year
a sketchbook compiling of writings; documents; drawings; photographs etc. this part of the project was focused on the traces and fragments we leave behind after we die and what we do with these objects; whether we should be sentimental or ruthless.

i had completed a previous project whilst my Grandpop was still alive, experimenting in early photography classes using long exposures on my slr. some of the photos once again became relevant, but had greater poignancy since he passed away. harrisnicholas040592-07
i experimented with using his belongings to draw with, in particular his glasses. i used crushed charcoal and the glasses to create an impression of his face. harrisnicholas040592-02
using the glasses gave me a much needed escape from figurative drawing, something i had been trying to move away from for quite some time. i also experimented with attaching pencils to the glasses arms, drawing as much detail as i saw fit and also combining the previously successful experiment of using crushed charcoal and the glasses.

i wanted to explore as many aspects as i could when completing this project, opting to experiment with the use of projecting images of my Grandpop onto his old clothes. i used the previously captured 35mm negatives, and slotted them into negative holders, then used an old slide projector found in my Grandpop's loft.

the project turned into a fascination into the things my Grandpop saw were important to keep; writings; old passports; old driving licenses etc. i felt as if i too had a duty to preserve these items, to collate and archive them.
the only way i saw i could conclude the project in the small amount of time i had was to plan a possible installation. in this installation, i would recreate my Grandpop's bedroom from my memory, using objects and writings that i had collated as well as projections of the images i captured prior to his death.
